Will my guitar get damaged from traveling in an airplanes cargo hold?
This will be a very long flight, about twelve hours. It would be inconveniant for me to take it as carry on since I am going on a trip with an organized group and we have to deposit our luggage before the flight. My guitar is an acoustic guitar. How safe is it for the guitar to be in the cargo of the plane along with the other luggage? Obviously it will be in a hardshell case.
I've flown with my guitar several times and avoid checking it whenever I can. Acoustic guitars, as opposed to solid bodies, are especially at risk in the cargo hold. The sudden and drastic temperature and humidity changes that can happen during landing and takeoff can cause the wood to rapidly expand or contract, causing it to crack.
I usually explain to the person at check-in that I don't trust them in handling it and would prefer to check it at the gate if necessary. Often times they will stow it in the pilot's closet at the front of the plane, some times they will let me stow it overhead, and if they can't do that, they just check it at the gate. Then it doesn't go through the regular baggage handling processes. Instead of picking it up at baggage claim, you get it back at the gate you arrived at!
